Jonesboro United Methodist Church: A Brief History
The
thirteen charter members (1875) of Jonesboro Methodist Church first worshipped in a school
house—non-denominational Jonesboro
Academy—then
built a church at the corner of West
Main and Academy Streets.
During
the past 133 years, variations in the name have reflected national
affiliations. Renovations, additions, and new buildings have brought about what
is located here now.
A
large brick sanctuary, education wing, and adjoining Wesley Center help the people of Jonesboro
United
Methodist
Church
in their efforts “To know Christ and to make Christ known.”
Between
1875 and 2008 many, many Methodists have gathered here, guided on their faith
journeys by a succession of encouraging pastors. Joe Wilburn is the 48th.
